Over the past thirty years, the screamo and wider emo scene has made note of some incredible splits as the genre has progressed. From The Promise Ring and Texas Is The Reason to Orchid and Jeromes Dream, the trend of bringing artists together to create a joint release of incredible music has only progressed further in recent times, including this surprise split. Released through Scottish DIY label Hunkofplastic Records, “Fourths” is a four-way split bridging the Atlantic Ocean together with two artists from each side after a year in the making. This split includes brand new music from Mitsubishi Suicide, Bright Little Stars, Burial Etiquette and Glowwworms, showcasing the continuing evolution and experimentation taking place in the modern day screamo scene on both sides of the water.

“Fourths” includes some special moments across its duration, opening with a track from London three piece Mitsubishi Suicide, who notably take a brief departure from their previous output of noisy post-hardcore in favour of a more stripped back approach, which still compliments the rest of their previous music. The same can be said for Houston project Bright, Little Stars’ contribution to the release, who have evolved their brand of lo-fi bedroom skramz to a cleaner sound more reminiscent of sassy metalcore while still making it sound unique to them. Hailing from Thunder Bay, Ontario, the ever prolific emo powerhouse that is Burial Etiquette have contributed four songs to add to their ever growing discography of music, including two final tracks written by Taylor Jocelyn following their departure from the band, marking the end of an era, whilst the beginning of a new one. Having gained a cult following within Scotland’s ever expanding DIY emo scene, Glowwworms rounds up the split with two tracks of bitcrushed noise pop, whilst also collaborating with fellow Glasgow band Bearhug to create the record’s cathartic closer, tying up an eclectic yet consistent of what the newer generation of screamo has to offer.

“Fourths” is out now on Bandcamp and streaming, with vinyl and cassettes available for pre-order from Hunkofplastic Records.
