“Ireland-born, LA-based Liam Mc Cay started Take Care the way he started the bulk of his recording projects: soundtracking his feelings in his bedroom, narrating his swirling teenage thoughts. He’d already done so under names like Birth Day, hold, and sign crushes motorist, named in honor of a favorite Duster track. Under all these aliases, Mc Cay felt freer to explore every style and every emotion at as fast a clip as his creative flow would allow him. As Take Care, Mc Cay dropped a trilogy of introspective, lovelorn albums between September 2022 and January 2023: Agony, Reject, and Alive. Starting from a home base of unhurried tempos, minimalist percussion, and fuzzed-out guitar cycles, Mc Cay grew with every album, experimenting with new instruments and borrowing from emo, noise, and bedroom pop, all in service of incandescent emotion. In the years since Mc Cay moved onto other aliases, other projects, and other sounds, his Take Care songs have taken on a life of their own, providing an extensive soundtrack for listeners looking to dwell in their primest of feelings without succumbing to pretense or shame. When Take Care is playing, you can let what you’re holding in cascade out.

Together, Agony, Reject, and Alive depict an artist making substantial growth within this idiosyncratic lane of alternative music at lightning speed, growing from the extreme rawness of Agony to something that’s just as vulnerable but slightly elevated on Reject and Alive. With each successive album, Mc Cay grew more curious about more elements he could test. Agony closes with the wildly popular string abstraction “Think Of Me Once In A While, Take Care,” and strings dot many more Take Care songs, adding a whine that’s both beautiful and visceral a la Starry Cat. “I’m Glad I’m Alive,” the penultimate track on Alive, layers guitar, strings, drums, and vocals for a lo-fi noise cacophony that is among Mc Cay’s most cathartic compositions. On their own, each album stands as a project of substance, but together, Agony, Reject, and Alive is all the more compelling; repeated meditations on yearning, infatuation, and dreaming of a life spent in the company of love makes that pit in your chest feel deeper and deeper with every strum. For Mc Cay, it’s not just about experiencing those feelings, it’s what it’s like to carry them with you everywhere, to have them at the top of mind, day in, day out, while building the identity you want to inhabit once you reach adulthood. It’s an unvarnished expression of adolescent longing, one that resonates with audiences currently in the throes of youth and those living beyond it.”
